Recognizing ADHD Traits in Women

Recognizing ADHD Traits in Women
Although Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can be assessed in people of all ages and genders, it can present differently in female-identified persons. Men and women may experience ADHD traits differently, in part due to masking (the suppression of ADHD qualities) and different societal expectations. Hence the team at Unique Peace Counselling would like you to know how to better identify ADHD traits in women. At this time, we are not qualified to provide an official assessment but can help you to understand your relationship with ADHD.

Traits of ADHD in Women and How They Differ from Men

Individuals with ADHD may experience a variety of traits, regardless of gender. However, several trends have been seen in women who are ADHD that are less common in men who are ADHD. Examples of these include inattention and hyperfocus. ADHD women frequently have trouble maintaining focus and concentrating, especially on tasks that feel forced, tedious or understimulating. They could also struggle with maintaining organisational habits, finishing chores, or noticing the passage of time leading to running late. Furthermore, while both men and women can experience hyperfocus as an ADHD trait, it can present differently in both. Hyperfocus is the act of having a surplus of attention. This occurs more frequently when an ADHD person encounters something that aligns with their interests but can occur outside this possibility as well.

Why ADHD Is Often Overlooked Or Misdiagnosed With Women

ADHD is frequently misdiagnosed or ignored in women for a variety of reasons; some of which are presentational variations and a lack of understanding and information. ADHD women often display traits that are different from how one would typically think of ADHD. Women frequently express more internalised ADHD traits, while the standard diagnostic criteria were based on how men more typically present. This can lead to ADHD traits being missed by professionals. Due to ADHD biases and the DSM-5 traits being based on studies in young men, some diagnostic professionals may have out-of-date information leading to ADHD traits being missed in women. Unfortunately, women are also more likely to experience medical gaslighting, meaning that they can occasionally have their needs dismissed by medical professionals.
