Based on psychoanalysis, this form of therapy can be used to work through several issues while mainly focusing on past struggles that affect your present and future. With this approach, your therapist learns about your history, your perspective on it, and your feeling responses to pinpoint your patterns and habits. This will help them formulate techniques to help you change the patterns that get between you and your goals.
Also known as CBT, this type of therapy focuses on how your thoughts affect your actions. CBT is mostly used for short-term treatment to alter the way you relate to your thoughts and how your actions are influenced by your thoughts. CBT can serve those who need depression treatment, or have various forms of intrusive thoughts.
This is an encompassing form of CBT that is based on problem-solving techniques and learning acceptance strategies. Also known as DBT, this type of therapy is mostly used for those who haven’t been helped by other forms of therapy. DBT mostly serves situations involving unhelpful thought patterns, eating disorders, borderline personality disorder, self-harm, etc.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is an evidence-based approach to counselling that helps clients identify their values and realign with them in a variety of situations. As the name suggests, the therapy is also designed to help clients accept things that may interfere with their ability to be fully value-congruent in some situations. This approach is often used in neurodivergent-affirming care.
There are many different types of therapy for many different situations. Whether you need an approach for anxiety, depression or other mental health issues, there is likely an approach or combination of approaches that can help you.
