How to Improve Mental Health

HOW TO IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH

Mental health refers to your overall psychological well-being, which includes the way you feel about yourself, your ability to cope with stress, and the quality of your social relationships.

From childhood and adolescence to adulthood, your mental health plays a big role in the way you feel stress, relate to others, and make choices. Some factors, such as family history, some social barriers and life experiences cannot be controlled. However, agency can be found in monitoring responses to these things.

REGULAR ACTIVITY & EXERCISE

Take Care of Your Physical Health

Movement can mean something different to each person, and it doesn’t necessarily involve sports or going to the gym.

Instead, focus on making exercise enjoyable for you by choosing physical activities that work best for your body, health, and preferences. Regular activity and exercise can have a major impacts on your emotional health, relieve stress, improve memory, and help you sleep better.

Good nutrition will not only help you feel better and improve your mood but decrease anxiety and stress. Certain foods, such as berries, fatty fish, and whole grains, are linked to boosting your mood and decreasing rates of depression.

However, eating and maintaining exercise can be difficult for those who are neurodivergent. Due to different sensory needs, both exercise and nutrition can be sources of stress. Should this apply to you, we can set you up with other specialists that are neurodivergent-informed that can help you reach your exercise and nutrition goals.

CONNECT WITH OTHERS

Surround Yourself With Positive Influences

Humans are social creatures, and strong relationships can have a positive influence in various ways.

Having a good social support network helps protect you against the harm of stress, ease the feelings of loneliness, and add meaning to your life. Besides connecting with family and friends, it’s good to find ways to get involved with your neighbourhood and community.

Maintaining social relationships for someone who is neurodivergent may look very different. Working with a therapist who is neurodivergent-informed means that they can help you relate to others in a way that helps you to unmask. It also means that they can help you to create social support networks that may look different but work for your needs (for example, setting up hobby groups where the expectations to socialize might be different).

SLEEP IS ALSO IMPORTANT

The Importance of Rest

Sleep is important for everyone, but can be even more important for those who are neurodivergent. When we are not well rested, often are senses can be even more prone to overstimulation than usual. Working with a neurodivergent-informed therapist can make a big difference in discussing sleep tips that meet your sensory needs. We can also help you to advocate for greater rest periods in different forms. Finally, your therapist may also be able to help get you connected to a sleep study clinic, should the need be present.
