How to Improve Mental Health

How to Improve Mental Health

Mental health refers to your overall psychological well-being, which includes the way you feel about yourself, your ability to deal with difficulties, and the quality of your relationships.

From childhood and adolescence to adulthood, your mental health plays a big role in the way you deal with stress, relate to others, and make choices. Some factors, such as family history, genetics, and life experiences cannot be controlled. However, you do have an influence on a wide portion of your mental health.

Protecting your mental health is easier than you think. With the help of small activities practised every day, you’re able to build a stronger resilience and better cope with difficult situations life throws at you.

Regular Activity & Exercise

Take Care of Your Physical Health

Movement can mean something different to each person, and it doesn’t necessarily involve going to the gym.

Instead, focus on making exercise enjoyable for you by choosing physical activities that work best for your body, health, and preferences. Regular activity and exercise can have a major impact on your emotional health, relieve stress, improve memory, and help you sleep better.

Good nutrition will not only help you feel better and improve your mood but decrease anxiety and stress. Certain foods, such as berries, fatty fish, and whole grains, are linked to boosting your mood and decreasing rates of depression

Connect With Others

Surround Yourself With Positive Influences

Humans are social creatures, and strong relationships can have a positive influence in various ways.

Having a good social support network helps protect you against the harm of stress, ease the feelings of loneliness, and add meaning to your life. Besides connecting with family and friends, it’s good to find ways to get involved with your neighbourhood and community.

While phone calls and social networks have their place, nothing beats face-to-face communication. Make a point to catch up and spend time with loved ones, whether that’s by meeting up for a morning walk or sitting down to have coffee and a treat.

Sleep is Non-Negotiable

Don’t Skimp on Sleep

It’s so tempting to press the “next episode” button, especially if the show or movie you’re watching has stopped at a cliffhanger. However, staying up all night staring at a screen is a dangerous rabbit hole to go down.

Sleep is a non-negotiable for both your physical and mental health. Skipping a few hours here and there can take a toll on your mood, energy, awareness, and ability to handle stressful situations.

While you should aim to get at least seven hours of sleep, it’s unrealistic to expect to fall asleep the moment your head touches the pillow. To get enough quality sleep, try to avoid caffeine after 3 pm, take a break from the stimulation of screens, and sleep at the same time every day.
